Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College women's soccer team has counted on Taryne Lee to score the big goals this season.
So when her team needed another scoring binge, Lee obliged.
The reigning NCAA Division III National Player of the Year came through again with two second-half goals to lead Wheaton to a 3-1 win over UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.
The No. 15 ranked Thunder improved to 7-1-1 while the No. 10 ranked Pointers fell to 7-2-0. Wheaton also improved to 3-0-1 against top 25 ranked opponents this season.
Coming into game, Lee (PICTURED LEFT) and teammate Ali Kopelman had scored goals in three-straight games. But neither team could get any scores on the board in the first half, which saw Wheaton holding a 14-2 shot advantage.
The Pointers finally broke through at 59:20 with a goal by Leah Larson on an assist by Kaylee Weise. Then the Thunder stepped up the pressure and 10 minutes later, Lee scored her ninth goal of the season on a cross from the side.
Only 19 seconds passed before Lee scored again with an assist from Mary Beth Grove. Jami Herrmann ended the scoring at 78:07 with an assist from Kopelman.
"It's important every time Taryne steps on the field," Wheaton head coach Pete Felske said. "She'll find a way to keep us in games. For us to be competitive, we need her spirit. When she's on the field, our team is intense all the time."
The Thunder dominated ball possession and it showed in the 38-4 shot disparity. Wheaton also held an advantage of 9-1 in corner kicks.
"Other teams are respecting our offense," Felske said. "They're sitting a lot of players back and when you do that, we'll have opportunities. I'm more concerned with quality opportunities. Taking 38 shots is great, but we also had seven or eight great opportunities to score, which was even better."
Ingrid Erickson had one save and allowed one goal for the win. UWSP's Pam Luckow made 12 saves while allowing the three goals.
The Thunder return to action on Monday as they host University of Chicago at 7:00 PM.
