Rock Island, Ill. - The 15th-ranked Thunder women's soccer team opened conference play with a 3-0 win at Augustana College (6-2-0/1-0-0) on Thursday night. Wheaton used three-second half goals in a 12-minute span to earn the victory.
Wheaton is now 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Thunder will host 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 PM. Saturday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio and TV with streaming video online at www.wetn.org.
Freshman Ali Kopelman (PICTURED) gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead with her fifth goal of the year 65:13 into the match, thanks to an Ann Turner assist. All-American Taryne Lee's eighth goal was assisted by Kopelman at the 71:51 mark of the match to extend the Thunder advantage to 2-0. Wheaton's final goal was scored by Mary Beth Grove 77:14 into the match off of a Kari Klynstra assist.
Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 15-3, including an 8-0 edge in the first half. The Thunder held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Ingrid Erickson made one save in 86:23 minutes of action and Karly Olson played 3:37 in net. Augustana netminder Kayla Radloff made seven saves and allowed three goals.
