Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College volleyball team defeated Kalamazoo College 3-1 in the Wheaton College Volleyball Five-Team Tournament on Saturday.
The Thunder won the match 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16 to improve to 5-7 on the season. The Hornets fell to 5-10 on the year.
In the first set, Wheaton fell behind early but started to get into an offensive groove to even the score at 10-10. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the way, with the Thunder getting some late breaks to take a lead and win the set 25-21.
Wheaton jumped out to quick 12-6 lead in the second set with good serves. However, the Hornets rallied back to steal the set 25-23.
The third set started poorly for Wheaton with service errors and an out of sync offense. The momentum swung back with good serving late in the set, especially from setter
Jenna McCallister, who tallied five aces along the way for a 25-18 win.
The fourth and final set went to the Thunder to clinch the match.
Statistically,
Lisa Jutsum led the offense with 11 kills and added 16 assists.
Hannah McGinnis and
Hannah Haskell scored 10 kills each while
Kelli Miller tallied nine kills and five blocks.
McCallister led the team with 25 assists and
Ashlie Pace contributed 19 digs.
Although the Thunder scored 12 aces, they also committed 10 service errors - a number which coach
Jennifer King Soderquist could have done without.
"We missed way more serves than we normally do," Soderquist said. "I think we had one block in the first two sets and finally picked it up in sets three and four. They pushed us."
