Men's soccer opens the year with a 2-0 win against Carroll (Wis.)

Senior captain Jonathan Liechty contributed a goal and an assist

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton men's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win against Carroll (Wis.) on Friday night at Wheaton's Bob Baptista Invitational. Tonight's contest was a re-match of a 2007 NCAA Tournament First-Round match between the two teams that Wheaton won 3-0. Fourth-ranked Messiah College defeated University of Chicago 5-1, in today's other match of the Baptista Invitational.

In Saturday's action Wheaton will host Messiah at 7 PM in a re-match of the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championship Match. Saturday's match will have streaming video on the internet at www.wetn.org and live statistics available here. Chicago will take on Carroll at 2 PM in Saturday's other match.

Thunder junior Jason VanderVeen gave the hosts a 1-0 lead against Carroll tonight when he scored off of a double-assist from team captains Jonathan Liechty and Ben Theimer at the 29:59 mark of the match. The Thunder held the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half and the first 25 minutes of the second half, until Liechty scored off of an assist from fellow senior Matt Swartz at the 70:46 mark of the match.

Wheaton out-shot the Pioneers 18-8, including a 9-3 edge in the second half and the hosts held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Thunder freshman made two saves in tallying a shutout in his first collegiate appearance in goal. Carroll's Stanislaw Miaskowski made six saves and allowed two goals for the Pioneers.
