Carol Stream, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team spilt a doubleheader at home with Millikin on Monday afternoon. The Big Blue won the opener 5-3, and the Thunder played well in the nightcap to earn an 11-1 victory. Wheaton is now 15-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play, while Millikin falls to 9-11 overall and 2-9 in CCIW action. The Thunder will host Benedictine on Tuesday (LIVESTATS) in a non-conference nine-inning game at Legion Field in a 3:30 PM start.
Millikin won the first game on Monday, 5-3, as the Big Blue plated five runs, on 10 hits, with three errors and Wheaton scored three runs, on seven hits, with two errors. Millikin took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wheaton added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI-single by Josh Weaver, to cut the guests' lead to 3-1. Millikin scored twice in the top of the sixth inning for a 5-1 Big Blue lead. Wheaton scored once in the sixth inning, on a RBI by Mark Price and the Thunder added another run in the bottom of the seventh when a bloop double to centerfield by Brian Kolb (PICTURED RIGHT) drove in a run to account for the 5-3 final score.
Senior starting pitcher Luke Munch (2-2) took the loss in 5-1/3 innings of work on the mound. Munch allowed five runs, with four earned runs, on nine hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Tim Urbanowicz pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit, with a walk.
Weaver was 2-for-3, with a RBI and two stolen bases. Kolb went 2-for-4, with a double, two runs, a RBI and two stolen bases. Freshman# Danny Pyne# collected two hits, going 2-for-3, with a run.
Millikin starting pitcher Joe Frigo (1-3) earned the victory in six innings as he allowed two unearned runs, on four hits, with three strikeouts. Joe Kentos picked up his first save in an inning of scoreless relief.
Wheaton won the second game 11-1 in eight innings as the hosts scored 11 runs, on 14 hits, with one error and Millikin scored one run, on two hits with two errors. Wheaton took an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first as Nate Pugh and Danny Pyne each drove in runs in the inning. Wheaton's lead increased to 4-0 in the second when Munch drew a one out walk and scored on a single by Kolb. The hosts added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when another one-out walk by Munch led to a run as Weaver hit a single that brought the senior home.
Millikin scored its lone run in the top of the sixth inning, to cut the Thunder advantage to 5-1. Wheaton scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 9-1 as Dan Falvey hit a RBI-single, Charlie Antal drove in a run with a double and a Munch sacrifice fly helped the Thunder cause. Wheaton added two runs in the bottom of the eight to account for the final score of 11-1. Dan Falvey hit a RBI-single through the left side of the infield and Kolb belted a single to right field with the bases loaded to score the one run Wheaton needed to end the game.
Weaver earned the win in 5-1/3 innings as the starting pitcher to improve to 4-2 on the year. He allowed one run, on two hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore John Little pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three. Freshman Zach Fallon did not allow a hit in one inning of scoreless relief.
Kolb went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, driving in two runs, a run scored and a stolen base. Pyne was 2-for-3, with a walk, a run scored and a RBI. Pugh hit a double as he went 2-for-4, with a walk, a run and a RBI. Falvey was 2-for-4, with a walk, two runs scored and two more driven in.
