Women's basketball falls to #16-Illinois Wesleyan

– The Thunder women's basketball team lost a 68-59 decision to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in King Arena. Wheaton is now 11-10 on the year and 3-7 in conference play. Illinois Wesleyan, ranked 16th in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll, is 19-2 overall and 9-1 in the CCIW.

The Thunder led today's game 25-15 with 4:40 left in the first half, when the guests put together a 15-4 scoring run to close out the opening half for a 30-29 Illinois Wesleyan lead at halftime. The Titans scored the first eight points of the second half to jump out to a 38-29 lead with 17:00 left in regulation. Wheaton countered with a 9-2 scoring run to cut the Titans' lead to 40-38, with 14:30 left in regulation. However, that would be the closest the Thunder could get to the guests, as Illinois Wesleyan led by as much as 10 points late in the game.

Junior Kathleen Fidelia (PICTURED) led Wheaton with 14 points, four assists and four steals. Sophomore Sarah Jones added 11 points, with a team-high nine rebounds, including four offensive boards. Senior Claire Glass scored 10 points, with eight rebounds, including five offensive caroms. Forward Jamie Jones scored eight points, while Annie Bowen and Katie Heddell each scored seven points.

Claire Sheehan led the Titans with 23 points and she added four steals, with five rebounds. Crystal Dye scored 16 points, with five steals. Sarah Bull scored 13 points, while Mallory Heydorn scored 10 points, with seven assists and three steals. Christina Solari collected a game-high 15 rebounds, including six offensive boards.

Wheaton shot for a 30.5% (18-59) field goal percentage, with 23.5% (4-17) from three-point range and 73.1% (19-26) at the free throw line. Illinois Wesleyan shot 38.6% (22-57) from the field, with 34.4% (11-32) from three-point range and 76.5% (13-17) at the charity stripe. Each team collected 42 rebounds and Wheaton held an 18-13 edge in offensive rebounding.

The Thunder will travel to Millikin on Tuesday for a 7:30 PM tipoff with the Big Blue. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
