Rock Island, Ill. - The Thunder women's basketball team earned a 69-61 win at Augustana on Tuesday night. The Thunder improves to 11-9 overall and 3-6 in league play. Augustana is now 4-16 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Wheaton led 31-25 at halftime of tonight's contest. The Thunder led 41-33 with 11:50 left in the game when the guests put together an 11-0 run to extend the Thunder lead to 52-33 with 8:20 left in the game to give Wheaton a 19-point advantage, its largest lead of the game. Augustana chipped away at the Thunder lead over the final six minutes of the game and got as close as 66-61 with 30-seconds left in regulation, however, the Thunder could get no closer.
Sophomore Sarah Jones (PICTURED LEFT) led the Thunder with a game-high 14 points and four assists. Senior Katie Heddell scored 12 points, with four three-point field goals. Center Whitney Edgecombe (PICTURED RIGHT) scored 10 points, with two steals. Junior guard Kathleen Fidelia distributed eight assists, with seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Jamie Jones grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and added six points. Claire Glass scored six points, with five rebounds and three assists.
Sarah Rachwalski and Becky Rehn each scored nine points to lead the Vikings. Cindy Kastning led the Vikings with nine rebounds. Janelle Strohmaier grabbed seven rebounds, with nine points and Rehn added seven rebounds. Rehn distributed a team-high four assists,
Wheaton shot 38.2% (26-68) from the field, with 58.3% (7-12) from three-point range, and 52.6% (10-19) at the free throw line. The Vikings posted a 33.3% (17-51) field goal percentage, with 33.3% (3-9) from behind the three-point arc and 72.7% (24-33) at the charity stripe. Augustana out-rebounded the Thunder 44-41, however, Wheaton held an 18-17 edge on the offensive glass.
