Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder women's basketball team was dealt a 66-59 defeat to Carthage College on Saturday afternoon in King Arena. Wheaton is now 11-12 on the year and 3-9 in CCIW play. Carthage is 17-6 overall and 9-3 in conference action.
Carthage led the hosts 31-21 with 2:10 left in the first half. Wheaton would go on to out-score the Lady Reds 11-3 in the final two minutes of the second half to cut the Carthage lead to 34-32 at halftime. The two teams battled through a tightly contested second half. With 3:00 left in regulation the score was tied at 58-58, however Carthage out-scored the Thunder 8-1 over the final three minutes of the game to secure the win.
Sophomore Sarah Jones (PICTURED LEFT) led Wheaton with a team-high 18 points and she added five rebounds. Kathleen Fidelia scored 13 points, with eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Claire Glass (PICTURED RIGHT) scored 10 points, with nine rebounds and three assists.
Carthage's Lisa Gartelos scored a game-high 22 points, on 8-for-12 shooting from the field and six rebounds. Shana Lieberman added nine points, with seven assists. Katie Jarger scored eight points, with seven rebounds.
Wheaton shot a 34.% (18-53) effort from the field, with 27.3% (3-11) from three-point range and 64.5% (20-31) at the free throw line. Carthage recorded a 46.8% (22-47) field goal percentage, with 63.3% (19-30) at the free throw line. Wheaton out-rebounded Carthage 38-36, with a 16-8 edge on the offensive glass.
Wheaton will travel to North Park on Tuesday night for a 7:30 PM tipoff with the Vikings. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
