A strong second half leads the fourth-ranked Thunder to a 68-56 victory against Calvin

Wheaton, Ill. – The fourth-ranked Wheaton College men's basketball team out-scored Calvin 36-21 in the second half on Friday night to earn a 68-56 victory against the Knights in the first night of action in the fifth-annual CCIW/MIAA Classic. Carthage defeated Hope 89-68 in Friday's other contest. Carthage (3-1) will face Calvin (3-2) Saturday at 1 PM in King Arena and Wheaton (5-0) will host Hope (3-2) at 3 PM.

Calvin led Wheaton 35-32 at halftime of their meeting tonight. Wheaton out-scored the Knights 12-2 over the first three minutes of the second half to give the Thunder a 44-37 lead with 17:00 left in the game. A layup by Calvin's John Mantel with 13:58 left in the game closed Wheaton's advantage to 48-44. However, Wheaton stretched its lead to 11 with a 7-0 run that included five points by Kent Raymond, to give the hosts a 55-44 lead with 12:00 remaining in the contest. Calvin never got closer than a seven-point deficit for the remainder of the game as Wheaton emerged with the 12-point win.

Raymond, the Thunder All-American, led Wheaton with 28 points and seven rebounds. Senior center Andy Wiele scored 12 points, with eight rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Andrew Jahns (PICTURED RIGHT) scored 10 points for the Thunder, including a pair of three-pointers. Freshman Tim McCrary scored nine points with four steals and Jake Carwell added six assists and three steals.

Matt Veltema and Danny Rodts led Calvin with 13 points each. John Mantel added nine points, with seven rebounds.

Wheaton shot 42.6% (20-47) from the field, with 38.5% (5-13) from three-point range and 85.2% (23-27) at the free throw line. The Knights posted a 43.4% (23-53) field goal percentage, with 30.8% (4-13) from behind the three-point arc and 66.7% (6-9) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Knights 33-27 on the evening.

In the evening's first game Carthage All-American Steve Djurickovic scored a tournament-record 33 points to lead the Red Men to an 89-68 victory against Hope. Carthage's Sean Fendley scored 22 points and Adam Stuart added 13 points, with 12 rebounds. Jesse Reimink led Hope with 16 points and seven rebounds.
