Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team earned an 84-52 victory at University of Chicago (0-6) on Wednesday night. Wheaton, ranked fourth in the most recent D3Hoops.com Top-25 poll, improves to 4-0 on the year. The Thunder has out-scored its opponents by nearly 30 points per game (29.8 PPG) in its four victories to open the season.
Chicago led Wheaton 11-6, 15:30 into the first half, when the Thunder went on a 19-5 scoring burst to take a 25-16 lead with 8:40 remaining in the first half. Wheaton never looked back, holding a 37-25 lead at halftime. Wheaton out-scored the Maroons 47-27 in the second half to earn the 84-52 victory.
Five Wheaton players scored in double-digits tonight as the Thunder tallied 23 assists on its 30 field goals. All-American Kent Raymond (PICTURED RIGHT) scored a game-high 20 points and contributed five assists. Raymond shot 13-of-14 at the free throw line to help his cause tonight. Preseason All-American Andy Wiele scored 17 points, with seven rebounds and three assists. Forward Jake Carwell shot 6-for-8 from the field, to score 12 points and he distributed four assists. Ben Panner scored 10 points and freshman guard Jeremy Pflederer contributed 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Tim McCrary collected six rebounds and snagged three steals.
Matt Corning led Chicago with 19 points. Adam Machones scored nine points and Jake Pancratz added seven points for the hosts.
Wheaton posted a 60% (30-50) field goal percentage, with 60% (6-10) from behind the three-point arc and 94.7% (18-19) at the free throw line. Chicago shot 47.5% (19-40) from the field, with 35% (7-20) from three-point range and 53.8% (7-13) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Maroons 29-14, with a 10-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Thunder scored 22 points of off Chicago's 18 turnovers.
