Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team won the 13th annual Lee Pfund Classic thanks to an 81-59 victory against Ohio Wesleyan University in the tournament's championship game on Saturday. Wheaton, ranked third in the D3Hoops.com Preseason Top 25, is now 2-0 on the year. The Thunder will host Loras on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM in King Arena.
Wheaton held a 23-22 advantage with 4:49 left in the first half. The Thunder closed out the half with a 13-5 scoring run to hold a 36-27 lead at halftime. Wheaton never trailed in the second half, with the 22-point margin in the final score being the team's largest advantage of the game.
Tournament MVP Andy Wiele led the Thunder with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Kent Raymond, an all-tournament selection, and Ben Panner each scored 13 points. Freshman Tim McCrary scored 12 points and fellow rookie Jeremy Pflederer added seven points. Jake Carwell grabbed seven rebounds, with five assists. McCrary and Panner also had five assists each.
Kyle Holliday led Ohio Wesleyan with 16 points and nine rebounds. Pat Pellerite scored 14 points, while Kyle Miller scored 10 points, with seven rebounds and three assists.
Wheaton shot 60% (30-50) from the field, with 50% (6-12) from three-point range and 71.4% (15-21) at the free throw line. Ohio Wesleyan posted a 35.2% (19-54) field goal percentage, with 18.2% (2-11) from three-point range and 86.4% (19-22) at the charity stripe. Ohio Wesleyan held a 31-29 rebounding advantage, with a 14-7 edge on the offensive glass.
