Wheaton, Ill. - Despite temperatures in the high 40s, the Wheaton College women's soccer team wasted no time in getting warmed up.
The Thunder scored on their first three shots of the game and rode the momentum to a 7-2 victory over DePauw University in the final game of the regular season.
The Thunder improved to 16-3-1 while the Tigers fell to 5-10-2. Wheaton's next game will be the CCIW Tournament semi-final, where the No. 2 seed Thunder host No. 3 seed Augustana College at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Joe Bean Stadium.
As usual,
Taryne Lee sparked the offense by scoring only 1:08 into the game as she rolled her shot by the sprawling goalkeeper Christy Fillenwarth from within the goalie box. It was her 26th goal of the season, putting her just one goal away from her single-season school record of 27 that she set last year.
With DePauw's defense on its heels, Wheaton continued the onslaught with breakaway rushes from its forwards. Less than a minute after Lee's opening goal,
Jaime Orewiler scored with an assist from
Maria Della Torre.
The freshman forward came back for more at the 3:10 mark as Orewiler went in unassisted from near midfield and booted the ball over the outstretched keeper to make it 3-0.
The offensive starters weren't about to let up either. The Thunder scored three more goals to make it 6-0 only 19:42 into the match.
Laura Karsten scored on an assist from
Kari Klynstra, Klynstra netted her 10th goal of the year unassisted, and Orewiler made it a hat trick with her third goal of the game off a
Brittany Bergh assist.
Wheaton's first-half domination was reflected by a 21-3 advantage in shots.
DePauw got goals from Kristen McMahon and Emelie Johansson late in the second half to make it 6-2. But then
Chase Pouns scored her first collegiate goal with a sweet redirect on a long pass from
Esther Tan in front of the goalie box at 86:18. This is Pouns' first season playing collegiate soccer after previously playing for the basketball team at Wheaton.
The Thunder outshot the Tigers 27-15 in the game, while DePauw held a 7-4 corner kick advantage.
