15th-ranked Thunder defeats Dominican 7-1

All-American Taryne Lee recorded her third hat trick of the season

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's soccer team earned a 7-1 win against Dominican University on Tuesday night at home under the lights at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton, ranked 15th in this week's NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll, improves to 14-2-1 on the year. Dominican falls to 10-6-1 on the year.

Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Jamie Orewiler scored her sixth goal of the season just 7:14 into the match. Senior co-captain Kari Klynstra extended Wheaton's lead to 2-0 when she scored at 11:46 off of an Orewiler assist. Junior co-captain Taryne Lee scored a goal when she connected with sophomore Brittany Bergh's assist at 16:13. Dominican's lone goal of the night came at 18:07 when Michelle Reynoso scored at 18:07 to make it a 3-1 Wheaton lead, a scored that would hold until the halftime intermission.

Lee booted the ball into the back of the net at 49:12, off of a Klynstra assist to extend Wheaton's lead to 4-1. Lee scored at 53:04 into the match, marking her third goal of the night to collect a hat trick. Freshman MacKenzie Williams recorded her sixth goal of the year at 63:11 when she scored off of a Laura Karsten assist. Wheaton's final goal came at 68:08 when Jami Herrmann put the ball into the net off of a Maria Della Torre assist.

The Thunder offense dominated Dominican tonight as the hosts out-shot the Stars 40-4, including a 24-1 edge in the first half. Wheaton attempted 13 corner kicks in the match, Dominican had three. Wheaton senior Karly Olson started in the Thunder net as she allowed one goal in 45 minutes of work. Fellow senior Justine Morey played the entire second half, making two saves. Dominican goalkeeper Jacqui Lani made 11 saves and allowed seven goals in 71 minutes of action. Megan Schulz played the final 19 minutes in the Stars' net, making two saves.

Tonight's effort marked Lee's third hat trick of the season and the fifth time in her career she has had three or more goals in a match. It was also her sixth multi-goal match of the season and the 19th time she has put the ball into the net twice or more in a contest. The reigning Division III Player of the Year now has 22 goals this season and 69 in her career. She is just five goals shy of tying her own Wheaton record for goals in a single-season as she attempts to match or pass the 27 she scored last year. She is also just one goal shy of becoming only the third player in Wheaton history to score 70 goals in a career as she attempts to join Jennifer Binger who scored 70 from 2002-05 and Wheaton's all-time leading goal scorer Rebecca Mouw who had 82 from 1999-2002.

Wheaton will host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 PM in a key CCIW match (11-4-0/3-1-0 CCIW). Saturday's match will also be senior day as the Thunder women's soccer program honors its seven seniors.
