Wheaton, Ill. – The eighth-ranked Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team shut out CCIW foe Elmhurst, 6-0 on Wednesday night at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium. With its fifth consecutive victory Wheaton improves to 9-1-1 and 2-0-0 in CCIW play. The Thunder will host Aurora on Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM as a part of Wheaton's Homecoming activities.
Sophomore
Brittany Bergh gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead with a goal that was assisted by
Maria Della Torre. The Thunder lead was extended to 2-0 when freshman
Ali Kopelman (PICTURED) scored from a
Taryne Lee assist at the 12:10 mark. Freshman Jamie Orewiler used a rebound off of a shot attempt to extend the Wheaton lead to 3-0 at the 18:59 mark. Kopelman's second goal of the night was at 22:06 when she received a well-placed Lee assist. Wheaton held a 5-0 lead at halftime thanks to a
Kari Klynstra goal at 38:15 that was assisted by Kopelman. The lone Thunder goal of the second half was scored by freshman
MacKenzie Williams at 56:23 and was assisted by
Brittany Bergh.
Wheaton out-shot the Bluejays 33-3 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Four Wheaton goalkeepers combined in the Thunder shutout.
Ingrid Erickson made one save in 45 minutes of work,
Karly Olson played 14:17 in net,
Chase Pouns saw 11:52 of action and
Justine Morey was the netminder for the final 18:51 of the match. Elmhurst's Jessica Eberle made four saves and allowed five goals in 45 minutes in the Bluejays' net. Allison Korbel played the final 45 minutes for the guests, allowing one goal with seven saves.
