Elmhurst, Ill. – The Thunder women's basketball team lost its CCIW opener on Tuesday night by a score of 60-58 at Elmhurst College. The Bluejays' win was Elmhurst's first victory against the Thunder since 1989, snapping Wheaton's 34-game winning streak against the league foe. Elmhurst improves to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in league play. Wheaton is 8-4 on the year, with an 0-1 mark in CCIW action.
Wheaton's largest lead of the game was a 10-point advantage at 22-12 with 7:00 left in the first half. However, Elmhurst closed the half with a 16-9 scoring edge as the Thunder held a 31-28 lead at halftime.
Wheaton led 56-49 with 3:00 left in regulation when the Bluejays scored five unanswered points to cut the guests lead to 56-54. Thunder guard Kathleen Fidelia scored a basket with 1:23 left in the game to extend Wheaton's lead to 58-54. However, Fidelia's basket would be Wheaton's final points of the game, as the Bluejays closed the game with a 6-0 run. A three-point attempt by Wheaton fell short as Elmhurst earned the victory.
Sophomore Sarah Jones led the Thunder with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore center Carissa Bacon (PICTURED) played well with 12 points, on 6-for-6 shooting from the field and five rebounds. Fidelia scored eight points, with seven rebounds and six assists.
Brittany Bobruk led Elmhurst with 15 points and six rebounds. Lyndsie Long scored 12 points, with 10 rebounds and five steals. Candice Sutton scored 10 points, with seven rebounds.
Elmhurst used a pressure defense to force Wheaton into 27 turnovers, as the Bluejays out-scored Wheaton 28-13 in points off of turnovers. Wheaton posted a 48.2% (27-56) field goal percentage, with 16.7% (1-6) from three-point range and 37.5% (3-8) at the free throw line. Elmhurst shot 30.4% (21-69) from the field, with 15.0% (3-20) from behind the arc and 71.4% (15-21) at the charity stripe. Each team collected 41 rebounds; however, Elmhurst owned an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass.
Wheaton will host Augustana on Saturday at 2 PM in King Arena.
