Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's basketball team rallied to earn a 70-68 win against Elmhurst College tonight in King Arena. The Thunder scored eight un-answered points in the final 1:30 of tonight's game, to overcome a six-point deficit and earn the win. The lead was exchanged 13 times and the score was tied on 10 occasions in tonight's tightly contest battle.
Wheaton led the Bluejays 30-29 at halftime. Elmhurst's largest lead of the game was a six point advantage at 68-62 with 1:30 left in regulation, when Thunder senior Katie Heddell sank a three-pointer to cut the guests' lead to 68-65. An Elmhurst turnover led to a layup by Heddell that cut the Bluejays' lead to 68-67. With 16 seconds left Wheaton's Claire Glass grabbed a key offensive rebound and was fouled. Glass made one of her two free throw attempts to tie the game at 68-68. An Elmhurst field goal attempt with three-seconds left in regulation, that would have given the Bluejays a lead, was missed and Glass grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0.9-seconds left in regulation. Glass, a senior captain, calmly sank both free throws and an Elmhurst desperation three-point attempt missed to conclude Wheaton's astounding 8-0 run in the final 1:30 of the game.
Junior Jamie Jones led the Thunder with 17 points, on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. Jones also collected five rebounds. Glass tallied a “double-double” with 11 points and 10 rebounds, including four offensive rebounds. Heddell scored 10 points, including five points in the final 1:30 of the game, during Wheaton's 8-0 run. Whitney Edgecombe scored nine points, with 14 rebounds. Kathleen Fidelia scored nine points, with six rebounds and four assists.
Lyndsie Long scored 25 points, with five rebounds and three assists to lead the Bluejays. Candice Sutton scored 18 points, with nine rebounds and four assists. Brittany Bobruk scored eight points, with seven rebounds and three assists.
Wheaton shot 38.3% (23-60) from the field, with 16.7% (2-12) from three-point range and 59.5% (22-37) at the free throw line. Elmhurst tallied a 41.4% (24-58) field goal percentage, with 20% (2-10) from three-point range and 64.3% (18-28) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Bluejays 47-40, with a 17-10 edge on the offensive glass.
Wheaton improves to 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the CCIW. Elmhurst is now 7-11 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Thunder will return to action on Saturday with a 2 PM tipoff at North Central College.
