Kenosha, Wis. - The Thunder women's basketball team dropped a 64-51 decision at league-leading Carthage College on Saturday afternoon. With the loss Carthage improves to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the CCIW. Wheaton is now 9-8 overall and 1-5 in the league. Wheaton will host Elmhurst on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio and WETN-TV, with live streaming video available online at www.wetn.org. The two teams battled through a tightly contested first half that saw the score change hands or be tied on 10 different occasions. Wheaton's final lead of the half, and of the game, was a 23-22 Thunder advantage with 4:00 left in the opening half. Carthage closed out the half with a 9-2 scoring surge to own a 31-25 lead at halftime. Wheaton continued to battle throughout the second half; however, the Lady Reds hung on for the win.
Senior Katie Heddell (PICTURED) led the Thunder with 12 points, as she sank a trio of three-pointers, and added three steals. Junior Kathleen Fidelia scored 10 points, with four rebounds and three assists. Forward Jamie Jones also scored 10 points, with four rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Jones led Wheaton with a team-high eight rebounds.
Erika Buchholz led Carthage with 14 points, five assists and seven rebounds. Lisa Gartelos scored 10 points, with 11 rebounds. Carlie Janowiak added nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Wheaton shot 36.5% (19-52) from the field, with 26.7% (4-15) from three-point range and 64.3% (9-14) at the free throw line. Carthage recorded a 39.7% (23-58) field goal percentage, with 23.5% (4-17) from three-point range and 60.9% (14-23) at the charity stripe. The Lady Reds out-rebounded Wheaton 47-31, with a 17-6 edge on the offensive glass that aided the hosts to a 20-6 advantage in second-chance points.
