Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's basketball team dropped a 59-56 decision to Augustana on Saturday afternoon at home. With the win, Augustana snapped its six-game losing streak to the Thunder. Wheaton is now 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCIW, while Augustana improves to 3-10 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Wheaton led 26-25 at halftime. With 46-seconds left in regulation Wheaton's Kathleen Fidelia (PICTURED LEFT) drove to the basket for a layup that tied the game at 56-56. On Augustana's next trip down the court the Vikings' Maegan Skahill sank a layup with 27-seconds left to give the guests a 58-56 lead. A Wheaton shot attempt missed with five-seconds left in the game and Skahill collected the rebound and was fouled. She made one free throw with 2.7-seconds left in the game to account for the final score of 59-56 as a desperation three-pointer by Wheaton hit off the backboard as time expired.
Fidelia led all players with 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field. She also added five rebounds. Sophomore Carissa Bacon (PICTURED RIGHT) scored nine points and Katie Heddell contributed eight points. Forward Jamie Jones added seven points, with five rebounds.
Sarah Rachwalski led Augustana with 14 points, on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and five rebounds. Skahill scored 10 points, with eight rebounds. Katie Engwall scored nine points, with five rebounds and Becky Rehn scored eight points, with four rebounds and four assists.
Wheaton tallied a field goal percentage of 39.3% (22-56), with 30.8% (4-13) from three-point range and 50% (8-16) at the free throw line. Augustana shot 38.5% (20-52) from the field, with 25% (2-8) from three-point range and 68% (17-25) at the free throw line. Augustana out-rebounded the Thunder 43-33, with a 16-12 edge on the offensive glass.
The Thunder will return to action on Tuesday when Millikin visits King Arena for a 7:30 PM tipoff.
