Whitewater, Wis. – The Wheaton volleyball team split its four matches this weekend at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational. Birmingham Southern defeated Wheaton 3-0 (30-13, 30-21, 30-14) to open action on Friday. The Thunder picked up the first win of the season in a 3-1 win (30-26, 29-31, 30-19, 30-28) against Brockport State on Friday night. On Saturday morning #3-ranked UW-Whitewater defeated the Thunder 3-1 (28-30, 30-21, 30-23, 30-28). Wheaton was a 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-21) victor against Brockport State in the tornament's third-place match.
In the season-opening loss to Birmingham Southern Mallory Sullivan (PICTURED) and Calla Young each led the Thunder with six kills and Ashley Pace added two aces. (Boxscore)
In the win against Brockport State, a NCAA Tournament participant in 2006, Sullivan led the Thunder with 15 kills and Lisa Jutsum recorded 14 kills. Setter Annie Himmelhaver recorded 37 assists and Jutsum added 12 assists. Senior Leah Whiteley-Rupp had a match-high 31 digs, with four aces. Kelli Miller recorded five blocks in the victory. In Saturday's first match Sullivan recorded a team-high 14 kills, with 25 digs and six total blocks in the loss to UW-Whitewater. Himmelhaver had 33 assists, with 10 kills. Jutsum recorded 19 kills and Whiteley-Rupp had four service aces, with a team-high 28 digs. (Boxscore)
In the Thunder victory against Brockport State in the third-place match Sullivan recorded a season-high 21 kills and added 19 digs. Miller added 10 kills and Calla Young had eight kills, with four service aces. Himmelhaver contributed 48 assists and Whiteley-Rupp had 27 digs, with three aces.(Boxscore)
