Aurora, Ill. – The top-ranked Thunder women's soccer team remained undefeated with a 5-1 win at Aurora University on Tuesday afternoon. Wheaton improves to 3-0 with the victory and extends its winning-streak to 21 consecutive matches, dating back to September 23, 2006.
Aurora took an early 1-0 lead when the Spartans' Kim Knaub scored her second goal of the year off of an Allison Bailey assist 1:21 into the match. Thunder freshman Shannon Wilkes scored her first collegiate goal 1:53 into the match, off of a Taryne Lee assist, to tie the contest at 1-1. Senior captain Sarah Richardson gave the guests a 2-1 lead, thanks to a Bethany Barton assist, with a goal 11:55 into the match. Wheaton took a 3-1 lead into halftime thanks to a goal that resulted from a penalty kick by at the 19:04 mark of the match.
Richardson took a Lee assist and scored 79:34 into the match to increase the Wheaton lead to 4-1. The final score of 5-1 was the result of Richardson's third goal of the match and sixth goal of the year, this time coming 80:35 into the contest.
Wheaton out-shot the Spartans 18-7, including a commanding 14-2 edge in the first half. The Thunder held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert played 84:15 in goal, making three saves, with one goal allowed. Junior Justine Morey played 5:45 in net for Wheaton. Aurora goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis played all 90 minutes, making nine saves and allowing nine goals.
Wheaton will be off until Friday September 7 when St. Olaf College visits Joe Bean Stadium for a 7 PM match. The Thunder will host Calvin on Saturday at 3 PM. Friday's match will be broadcast on WETN radio and the second half of Saturday's match will be broadcast, following the conclusion of the Wheaton football game at Albion.
