Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men' soccer team, ranked second in the NSCAA Division III preseason coaches poll, tied Loras College 1-1 in two overtimes tonight in the final match of Wheaton's Bob Baptista Invitational. Wheaton is now 1-0-1 on the season, while Loras also is 1-0-1. The Thunder will return to action on Friday afternoon at Hope College. Friday's match will be the first of two on a weekend trip to Michigan that will conclude on Saturday with a match at Calvin College.
Wheaton took an early lead when senior Strider Elass (PICTURED) scored 1:15 into the match off of an assist by Jonathan Liechty. Loras tied the match late in the first half when AJ Josephs scored 39:58 into the match off of a Matt Lamale assist. Josephs' goal was the final one of the of the night as the two teams battled back-and-forth through a scoreless second half and two scoreless overtime periods.
Loras out-shot Wheaton 25-19, thanks largely to a 14-7 edge in the first half. Loras had nine corner kicks, while the Thunder had one. Wheaton goalkeeper Micah Lamb made five saves and allowed one goal. Loras goalkeeper Tom Richlak made seven saves and allowed one goal.
