Elmhurst, Ill. – The top-ranked Thunder women's soccer team was a 6-1 victor at Elmhurst College on Wednesday afternoon. Wheaton is now 10-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Thunder will host Millikin on Friday at 4:30 as a part of Wheaton's Homecoming activities.
Today's victory was the 28th consecutive win for the Thunder, as the team is now just one win shy of tying the school record for consecutive victories. The current team-best mark for consecutive wins was a 29-match streak that was put together from Sept 4, 2004 until Sept. 15, 2005. The 29-match streak put together by Wheaton in 2004-05 is also the third-longest win streak in the history of Division III women's soccer.
Sarah Richardson" width="200" align="right" src="/images/wsoccer/2007/9/26/Richardson3.jpg" />Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in today's match when junior Kari Klynstra scored 2:20 into the match as she put in a deflection from about 20-yards out. Sophomore Taryne Lee (PICTURED) scored the first of three consecutive goals 15:32 into the match. All three goals in Lee's hat-trick were assisted by senior captain Sarah Richardson. Lee and Richardson (PICTURED RIGHT) connected 16:57 into the match and again at the 27:27 mark as the duo gave Wheaton a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Maria Della Torre scored her fourth goal of the season off of an Erin Hodina assist. Della Torre's goal put the Wheaton lead at 5-0 at halftime of the match.
Elmhurst reached the scoreboard when Courtney Constantino scored her sixth goal of the year, 58:56 into the match off of a Cassandra Giese assist. Thunder freshman Elizabeth Fazio recorded her first collegiate goal 79:08 off of a double assist from Hodina and Brittany Bergh.
Wheaton out-shot Elmhurst 27-2, with a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert played in goal for the first half and did not face a shot. Junior Justine Morey played in the net for the second half, allowing one goal. Jessica Eberle played in the Elmhurst goal during the first half, with five saves and five goals allowed. Allison Korbel played in the Bluejays' net for the second half, making seven saves, with one goal allowed.
