Thunder men's netters split a pair of CCIW matches at the Jack Swartz Tournament

Deerfield, Ill. (3/31) – The Thunder men's tennis team opened its Jack Swartz Memorial Tennis Tournament on Friday night with a 9-0 win against conference rival Illinois Wesleyan. On Saturday afternoon the Thunder lostt to defending CCIW Champion Carthage 6-3. Wheaton is now 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Wheaton will remain in conference action this week with a league match at Elmhurst on April 3 and the squad will travel to North Central on April 4.

In Friday's win against Illinois Wesleyan, the Thunder cruised to victories in all six singles matches against the Titans, including freshman Drew Ziccardi who defeated Ryan Goorgen in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at number-six singles.

Carthage, a 6-3 victor against Wheaton on Saturday, is ranked eighth in the Central Region of Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Each team won three singles matches, the Red Men swept all three doubles matches to earn the 6-3 win. Wheaton junior Josh Williams defeated Carthage's Miguel Yunes 6-3, 6-2 at number-one singles. Yunes entered the match as the fourth-ranked ranked singles player in the Central Region by the ITA. Wheaton's Cory Kraftson defeated Phil Hammond of Carthage 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number-four singles. Ziccardi was a 6-4, 6-4 victor against Carthage's Andy Schwenke at number-six singles.
