Deerfield, Ill. (3/24) – The Thunder Tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend. On Friday night the Thunder were defeated by Wisconsin-LaCrosse 5-4. On Saturday afternoon Wheaton earned a 5-4 victory against Hope College. Wheaton is now 4-5 on the season. The Thunder will host the Jack Swartz Memorial Tennis Tournament March 30-31 at the College Park Athletic Club in Deerfield, Illinois.
Josh Williams was the 6-0, 6-2 winner against Wisconsin LaCrosse's Mike Van Lieshout at number-one singles. Ian Kircher of Wheaton was the winner at number-two singles against Mike Mooren, winning 6-3, 6-1. In doubles action, Wheaton grabbed two wins as Williams and Cory Kraftson won an 8-6 victory at number-one doubles and the tandem of Michael Simmerman and Ian Kirchner were the victors at number-two doubles in a 9-7 win.
In the victory against Hope Williams was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at number-one singles against Stephen Malvitz as a Williams improves to 7-2 on the season. Kraftson earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Hope's Cameron DeHaan at number-four singles.Graham Johnson defeated Zach Hooernschemeyer 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles. In splitting the six singles matches with the Flying Dutchmen, Wheaton won two of the three doubles matches to secure the 5-4 team victory. The tandem of Williams and Kraftson earned an 8-6 victory at number-one doubles and Kevin Graham and Warren earned an important 8-4 win at number-three doubles.
