Kenosha, Wis. (9/7) – The Thunder women's tennis team earned a critical 5-4 conference victory at Carthage College on Thursday afternoon. Wheaton improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW, while Carthage is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW.
Junior Brooke Parrish earned a 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 victory against Gina Klein at number-four singles. The team score was tied at 4-4 and the Klein-Parrish match was the final match left on the court, making Parrish's victory the decisive match in Wheaton's 5-4 win.
All-American Jordan Hook earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Carthage's Amanda Sta. Romana at number-one singles. Brittney Dunn was a 6-4, 6-4 victor at number-five singles against Taylor Gustafson of Carthage. Thunder freshman Jill Casserly was a 6-0, 6-1 victor against Ashley Morgan at number-six singles. Wheaton's other victory came at number-three doubles as the tandem of Shannon Hale and Dunn earned an 8-1 win.
In recent years Wheaton and Carthage have fought for the top spot in the CCIW standings. The two programs have combined to win 15 of the 20 CCIW Women's tennis championships that have been contested, including the past eight titles. Wheaton has won 11 conference titles to four for Carthage. Carthage has won three of the last four CCIW Championships (2002-04), a streak that was snapped last year by Wheaton. The 2006 CCIW Championships will be held October 6-7 in Bloomington, Illinois.
