Thunder takes three at home to win "Thunder Classic"

Wheaton, Ill. (9/16) - The Wheaton Thunder volleyball team swept the competition Saturday at home during its “Thunder Classic” quadrangular. Wheaton improves to 9-4 on the season with the trio of victories.

In the first match of the day, the Thunder defeated Knox College 3-0, (30-16, 30-14, 30-18). Sophomore Mallory Sullivan led the thunder with 14 kills and fellow sophomore Kelli Miller added 13. Setter Annie Himmelhaver had 38 assists for Wheaton, while Leah Whiteley contributed 30 digs to the win.

Wheaton rolled over Tri-State University in three games (30-27, 30-28, 30-22) in the second match, with Miller managing 15 kills and four blocks. Himmelhaver had 37 assists and Whiteley added 24 digs.

In the final match of the day, Wheaton defeated Monmouth College 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 33-31, 26-30, 15-8 ). Sophomore Lisa Jutsum hit 19 kills while Himmelhaver contributed 51 assists and Miller had five blocks. Sullivan added 18 kills and led the team with 33 digs.

Wheaton plays next on September 22, when it will host the Wheaton Invitational. The tournament will start on Friday at 5 PM and resume on Saturday at 10 AM. The Thunder will host Judson College, North Central College, Cardinal Stritch University, and Maranatha Baptist Bible College in the two-day tournament.
