Wheaton, Ill. (10/3) – The Thunder volleyball team earned an important 3-1 (30-17, 19-30, 30-23, 30-22) victory against Elmhurst College on Tuesday night in King Arena. Tonight's win marked the first Wheaton victory against the Bluejays in a CCIW regular season match since October 5, 1995.
Elmhurst is now 11-10 overall and 3-1 in CCIW action. With the victory Wheaton improves to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Thunder will remain in conference action on Friday night at 5 PM when it will host #13-ranked Carthage College.
In the 30-17 victory in game-one Wheaton closed out the game with a16-5 run to extend its lead from 14-12 to 30-17. In the decisive fourth game Elmhurst rallied from a 19-14 deficit to cut the Wheaton edge to 19-18. The Thunder then scored five consecutive points to take a 24-18 advantage en route to earning the 30-23 victory.
Sophomore Kelli Miller led the Thunder with 13 kills and four total blocks. Sophomore Mallory Sullivan recorded nine kills, with five service aces and a team-high 25 digs. Sophomore Lisa Jutsum made 11 kills and junior Calla Young made eight kills. Setter Annie Himmelhaver collected 44 assists and junior Leah Whiteley recorded 17 digs.
