Washington (Mo.) stuns sixth-ranked Wheaton women 2-1 in overtime

Wheaton, Ill. (9/2) – Washington University utilized two late goals to stun the sixth-ranked Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the final day of action at the Bob Baptista Invitational. DePauw University (2-0) scored an early goal to earn a 1-0 victory against Fredonia State (0-2) in the opening match on Saturday.

Both Wheaton and Washington now have records of 1-1 on the season. The Thunder will be off until September 7 when the University of LaVerne visits East McCully Field at 7 PM.

Wheaton and Washington battled through a scoreless first half. Senior All-American Laura Koontz broke the tie when she scored off of a Lauren Lindner assist 71:41 into the match. Washington's Becca Heyman scored off of a free kick 85:52 into the contest to tie the match at 1-1. Washington's Sara Schroeder placed the ball well above the out-stretched arms of Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert to score the game-winning goal just 2:56 into the first overtime.

Wheaton out-shot Bears 13-9 and held an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Eggert made five saves and allowed two goals in 92:56 of action in the Wheaton net. Washington goalkeeper Carrie Sear made six saves with one goal in the Bears' net.

In Saturday's first match DePauw's Katy Phillips scored off of a Mary Beth Robinson assist at the 19:28 mark of the match to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead that would become the final score. DePauw out-shot the Blue Devlis 16-1 and held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
