Wheaton, Ill. (11/11) – Wheaton College and Macalester College each earned victories on Saturday night in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament to advance to a Second Round featuring the two teams on Monday. The Thunder defeated Aurora University 2-0 on Saturday and Macalester was a 2-1 victor against DePauw University. Saturday's matches were originally scheduled to be played on Friday, however, were postponed one day because of lightning.
Wheaton will host the Scots on Monday at 11 AM in the Second Round to determine who will advance to Sectional Semifinals next weekend. Monday's match will be broadcast live on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org. The Wheaton-Macalester winner will face the winner of a Second Round match between Augustana College and UW-Eau Claire. UW-Eau Claire will host Augustana in that match on Sunday. The Sectional Round of the tournament will be held next weekend at a time and site to be determined later.
Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in its victory against Aurora when freshman Taryne Lee scored her 15th goal of the season 11:20 into the match off of a Libby Passiales assist. The Thunder lead remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half. Junior Sarah Richardson booted her team-best 18th goal of the year 64:46 into the match thanks to an assist from Lee.
Wheaton out-shot the Spartans 23-4 and held a 12-0 edge in corner kicks in the match. Thunder goalkeeper Kristin Eggert made four saves in recording her seventh shutout of the season. Aurora netminder Jenny Jarvis made three saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of action in the Spartans' net.
All of the scoring came in the second half of the second match of the night, as Macalester edged DePauw 2-1. Macalester's Rose Betzler recorded her sixth goal of the season 59:49 into the match to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Annie Borton increased the Macalester lead to 2-0, 69:25 into the match when she scored off of an assist from Grace Geiger. DePauw cut the Scots' lead to 2-1 when the Tigers were given a penalty kick opportunity in the 72nd minute and Mary Beth Robinson converted for DePauw. The Tigers could not get any closer as Macalester emerged with the victory advancement into the Second Round.
DePauw out-shot Macalester 10-7, but the Scots held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Macalester goalkeeper Jenny Lee made five saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work. DePauw goalkeeper Brooke Shipley made four saves and allowed two goals as she played the entire match for the Tigers.
