Decatur, Ill. (9/23) – The Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 2-1 victory at Millikin University on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Thunder to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in CCIW play. Wheaton will remain in conference play with a match at home against Elmhurst College on Wednesday at 7 PM. Millikin falls to 2-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
All-American Steve Rigby gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead just 6:45 into the match when he recorded his fourth goal of the season on a stellar play by the senior. Wheaton retained its 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half. Junior Justin West (LEFT) booted his second goal of the year 67:13 into the match to increase the Wheaton lead to 2-0. Millikin's Roc Cudone scored in the final minutes of the match to close the Thunder advantage to 2-1, but the Big Blue could never get closer.
Wheaton out-shot the Big Blue 14-6 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Thunder goalkeeper Ryan Souders played all 90 minutes in goal with one save and one goal allowed. Millikin netminder Bruce Janek saw minutes of action, with eight saves and he allowed two goals.
