Wheaton, Ill. (10/21) – The Thunder women's soccer team earned its eighth consecutive victory on Saturday night with a 1-0 win against Illinois Wesleyan at East McCully Field. Wheaton, ranked 12th in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Division III Coaches Poll, is now 14-2 on the season and 5-1 in CCIW action. Wheaton will conclude its CCIW regular season schedule at 7 PM on Wednesday at Carthage College. Wednesday's match will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
Wheaton's Libby Passiales scored the game-winning goal 37:40 into the match when she put the ball past Titan goalkeeper Emily Castner to give the hosts the 1-0 lead that would become the final score. The match was delayed for about 12 minutes late in the first half by lightning in the area around East McCully Field.
Wheaton out-shot the Titans 19-7 and held an 11-1 edge in the first half. The Thunder recorded eighth corner kicks, while Illinois Wesleyan had five. Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert made three saves in recording her third shutout of the year. Tonight's win was the 10th shutout on the season for the Wheaton defense. Castner made eight saves and allowed only Passiales' goal in the first half.
