Thunder topples Hope College, 2-0

Wheaton, Ill. (9/9) - The Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team combined a strong offensive effort with impressive defense to shutout the Hope Flying Dutchmen 2-0 tonight at East McCully Field. Wheaton improves to 4-1 on the season, while Hope falls to 1-4.

Junior Justin West scored an unassisted goal from just outside the box with 12:35 left in the first half. It was West's first goal of the season. Junior Cory Smith scored his first goal of the season in the 70th minute off of Senior Dolph Westlund 's assist.

Ryan Souders, the Thunder's senior goalkeeper, played all 90 minutes of tonight's game and recorded four saves. It was Souders' fourth shutout in the first five matches of the season. Hope's Michael Amerman allowed one goal and made two saves in the first period. Mark Dishow played the second period for the Flying Dutchmen and made two saves, also allowing one goal.

Hope made eleven shots on goal, one shy of the Thunder in the evenly-matched contest.

Wheaton plays next on Tuesday, at Judson College in Elgin, Ill. Tuesday's game starts at 4 PM and will be broadcast on WETN radio and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
