Thunder battles Elmhurst to a scoreless tie

Wheaton, Ill. (9/27) – The Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team battled CCIW foe Elmhurst College to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes on Wednesday night at Wheaton's East McCully Field. The contest was Wheaton's first tie of the season and it marked Wheaton's first scoreless tie since 2002. Wheaton is now 5-4-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play. Elmhurst has a 3-4-3 overall record, with a 1-0-1 mark in CCIW action. Wheaton will host Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday night at 7 PM in a match that will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.

Wheaton out-shot the Bluejays 21-7, with an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The hosts out-shot Elmhurst 9-2 in the second half and out-shot the Bluejays 7-1 over the two overtime periods, as Wheaton held a commanding 16-3 edge in shots after the halftime intermission. Junior Strider Elass took six shots for the Thunder and All-American Steve Rigby had four shots. Wheaton held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Wheaton's senior goalkeeper, Ryan Souders, played all 110 minutes in net, with two saves as he recorded his fifth shutout of the season. Elmhurst netminder Britt Blackwell played 110 minutes with seven saves. Each team made one back save in the match.
