Kenosha, Wis. (10/25) – The Thunder women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory at Carthage College on Wednesday night. Wheaton, ranked 12th in Division III, is now 15-2 on the season. In other CCIW action tonight Illinois Wesleyan tied Augustana 0-0. Wheaton finishes conference play with a 6-1 record to earn its 12th consecutive CCIW Championship. The Thunder earned the title by edging second-place Augustana's 5-0-2 conference record on the season.
Wheaton will be the number-one seed in the upcoming CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament that will begin next Wednesday. As the top seed Wheaton has earned the right to host a semifinal match of the tournament on Wednesday night at 7 PM. The CCIW Tournament Championship Match will be at the highest remaining seed in the men's tournament on November 4. The winner of the CCIW Tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
Wheaton and Carthage battled through a scoreless first half in tonight's match. The Thunder earned a 1-0 lead 63:47 into the match when freshman Maria Della Torre scored her seventh goal of the season off of a Sarah Richardson assist. Richardson secured the victory when she booted her team-best 14th goal of the year 85:10 into the match.
Wheaton out-shot the Lady Reds 12-4, with a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert made three saves in the Thunder net, recording her fifth shutout of the season. Carthage goalkeeper Lindsey Bollman made seven saves and allowed to goals in the Lady Reds' net.
Carthage falls to 12-4-1 on the season with a 4-1-1 record in league play. Wheaton will host Lake Forest College in its regular season finale on Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM.
