Wheaton, Ill. (9/8) – The Thunder men's soccer team used stingy defense and a timely goal to earn a 1-0 victory against Calvin College tonight at East McCully Field. Calvin entered tonight's match ranked 16th in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of American Division III Coaches Poll. Wheaton improves to 3-1 on the season, while Calvin falls to 2-1.
A well placed ball by All-American midfielder Steve Rigby found sophomore Ben Theimer 12:10 into the match and Theimer capitalized with his first goal of the season. That would be enough for Wheaton to prevail in the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Souders played 90 minutes and made one save in recording his third shutout in four Thunder matches this season. Calvin goalkeeper Matt Gardner played well in 90 minutes of work, allowing one goal with five saves. Wheaton out-shot Calvin 13-8, including a 7-3 advantage in the first half. The hosts held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Wheaton will host Hope (1-2) on Saturday at 4 PM in a match that will be broadcast on WETN at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org. The Flying Dutchmen lost 1-0 at North Park on Friday night.
