Rock Island, Ill. (9/23) – The Thunder women's soccer team, ranked 21st in the most recent Division III Coaches Poll, lost 2-1 at Augustana on Saturday night. The loss to the Vikings snaps a five-match winning streak for the Thunder and was the first Augustana victory in 16 tries against Wheaton. Tonight's loss also ended Wheaton 's 16-match winning streak in CCIW regular season matches. Augustana improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW. Wheaton is now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Thunder will host 12 th -ranked University of Chicago on Tuesday night at 7 PM.
Augustana's Tessa Roberts gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead when she scored off of a Lauren Polock assist 15:12 into the match. Thunder freshman Taryne Lee tied the match at 1-1 when she scored off of a Maria Della Torre corner kick. The score remained 1-1 for much of the rest of the contest. Roberts broke the deadlock when she booted her second goal of the night at the 73:54 mark of the match off of another Polock assist. The Vikings held onto the lead and emerged with the stunning victory.
Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 18-7 and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Kristin Eggert made one save and allowed two goal in 90 minutes in the Thunder net. Augustana netminder Keri Hess made 10 saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work.
