Second-ranked Hope tops the Thunder women's basketball team 83-81 in overtime

Wheaton, Ill. (12/2) – The defending Division III Champion Hope College Flying Dutch earned an 83-81 win in overtime against the Wheaton women's basketball team on Saturday in the second day of the CCIW-MIAA Classic, in Wheaton's King Arena. Hope, ranked second in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll, is 5-0 on the year, while Wheaton falls to 4-4. With today's win Hope avenged a 47-40 defeat to the Thunder at last season's CCIW-MIAA Classic; it was Hope's only loss in the 2005-06 campaign. In Today's opening game of the tournament Calvin defeated Carthage College 83-61.

Hope led 69-63 with 4:45 remaining in the second half of today's game when Wheaton scored 10-unanswered points to take a 73-69 lead with 1:25 left in regulation. A basket by Hope's Jordyn Boles cut the hosts' lead to 73-71 with 1:05 left in the second half. A Wheaton shot attempt with 35-seconds left fell short, and on Hope's next possession the guests missed a shot, however Hope collected the offensive rebound and Hope's Sarah Jurik was fouled. She made both free throw attempts to tie the game at 73-73 with six-seconds left. A Thunder three-point attempt as time expired in regulation fell short as the game went to overtime.

Wheaton took a 78-76 advantage with 3:10 left in overtime; however, it would be the hosts' last lead. Boles sank a three-pointer with 2:05 left in overtime to give Hope a 79-78 lead and the Flying Dutch extended the lead to 82-79 with 32-seconds left with a pair of free throws. Wheaton's Elizabeth Fox scored with 21-seconds left in the extra period to cut the lead to 82-81. Hope's Julie Henderson made a free throw, but missed her second attempt to give her team an 83-81 lead. Hope missed two free throws with six seconds left, but a Thunder three-point attempt hit off the rim as time expired.

Sophomore Kathleen Fidelia led Wheaton with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Center Jill Trenz scored 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field. She grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots. Fox (RIGHT) scored 19 points, with six rebounds and three steals. Brittany Cooper scored 10 points, with five rebounds and six assists.

Boles led Hope with 21 points as she made four three-point field goals. Jurik scored 18 points, with five rebounds and Ellen Wood scored 13 points, with 10 rebounds.

Wheaton shot 52.7% (29-55) from the field, with 40% (6-15) from three-point range and 56.7% (17-30) at the free throw line. Hope posted a 41.4% (24-58) field goal percentage, with 47.6% (10-21) from behind the three-point arc and 71.4% (25-35) from the free throw line. Hope held a narrow 36-35 advantage in rebounds, with an 11-6 edge on the offensive glass as the Flying Dutch out-scored Wheaton 15-4 in second-chance points.

Calvin defeated Carthage 83-61 in today's opening game. All-American Lisa Winkle led Calvin with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Kristi Brummel scored 12 points of off the Calvin bench and Marcia Harris added 11 points. Calvin shot 54.4% (31-57) from the field, with 50% (9-18) from three-point range and 63.2% (12-19) at free throw line.

Shana Lieberman led Carthage with 13 points and three steals. Lisa Gartelos scored 11 points off of the Lady Reds' bench and Lauren Johnston added 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field. Carthage posted a 33.3% (20-60) field goal percentage, with 23.5% (4-17) from three-point range and 68% (17-25) at the free throw line.
