Elmhurst, Ill. (1/20) – The Thunder women's basketball team was a 72-59 victor at CCIW-foe Elmhurst on Saturday evening. Wheaton improves to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW. Elmhurst is now 4-12 overall and 0-5 in league play. The Thunder will host longtime rival Millikin on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM in King Arena. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on WETN-TV, channel 72 on Wheaton-area cable outlets and on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area. The game will also be broadcast with streaming audio and video on the internet at www.wetn.org.
Elmhurst jumped out to a 17-8 lead over the first 5:30 of the game. Wheaton would go on to out-score the Bluejays 33-13 for the remainder of the first half to hold a 41-30 lead at halftime. Wheaton continued to extend its lead in the second half, leading by as many as 20 points in the final two minutes of regulation.
Senior captain Elizabeth Fox scored 17 points, with five rebounds to lead Wheaton. Junior Jill Trenz scored 12 points, with 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards and four blocked shots. Sophomore Katie Heddell scored 11 points and freshman Sarah Jones scored eight points, with four rebounds. Senior Brittany Cooper scored seven points, with nine rebounds.
Lyndsie Long led Elmhurst with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Candice Sutton scored 13 points, with five rebounds and two assists. Brittany Bobruk scored 10 points, with eight rebounds and four steals.
Wheaton recorded a 37.7% (23-61) field goal percentage, with 26.3% (5-19) from three-point range and 80.8% (21-26) at the free throw line. Elmhurst shot 33.8 % (24-71) from the field, with 27.8% (5-18) from three-point range and 66.7% (6-9) from the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded Elmhurst 50-38, with a 16-14 edge on the offensive glass as the guests out-scored Elmhurst 15-6 in second-chance points.
