Kenosha, Wis. (1/29) – The Wheaton women's basketball team picked up its fourth straight win on Tuesday night in a 61-46 CCIW victory at Carthage College. Wheaton improves to 12-6 overall and 7-1 in the CCIW, while Carthage falls to 11-8 on the season and 4-4 in league play. The Thunder will travel to North Park on Saturday for a 2 PM tipoff against the Vikings. Saturday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
Wheaton led the Lady Reds 24-19 at halftime of tonight's contest. The two teams battled through a tightly contested second half and Carthage cut Wheaton's lead to 41-38 with 9:30 remaining in regulation. At that point sophomore Kathleen Fidelia made a field goal spark a 12-1 scoring run by the Thunder, extending Wheaton's lead to 53-39 with 4:00 left in the game. Wheaton's largest lead of the game was the 15-point advantage it held at the conclusion of the 61-46 victory.
Junior All-American Jill Trenz led the Thunder with 17 points and she grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Trenz shot 5-for-7 from the field, with a 7-for-11 effort from the free throw line. Fidelia scored 14 points and Elizabeth Fox added seven points, with three assists. Brittany Cooper played stellar defense for the hosts and she contributed, five rebounds, five assists and five points. Freshman Sarah Jones came off the Wheaton bench to scored six points.
Erika Buchholz led Carthage with 11 points and five rebounds. Katie Jarger scored nine points, with six rebounds and Kristina Dredge scored eight points. Guard Carlie Janowiak tied for the team lead with six rebounds and she dished out a game-high five assists.
Wheaton shot 37.7% (20-53) from the field, with 30.8% (4-13) from the field and 68% (17-25) from the free throw line. Carthage posted a 29.2% (14-48) field goal percentage, with 25% (3-12) from three-point range and 88.2% (15-17) from the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the hosts 43-30, including a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass.
