Women's basketball upsets #16-University of Chicago

Whitney Edgecombe tallied a "double-double" with a strong second half

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Wheaton Thunder women's basketball team earned its second victory of the year against a nationally-ranked foe on Saturday, with a 55-47 win against University of Chicago. The Maroons', ranked 16th in this week's D3Hoops.com Top-25, fall to 5-2 on the year. Last Friday Wheaton defeated Calvin, ranked sixth in Division III at the time, 59-52. Wheaton is now 6-3 overall.

Chicago led 16-12, with 6:40 left in the first half when the Thunder put together a 12-5 run to close out the opening half and give the hosts a 24-21 lead at halftime. Chicago regained the lead midway through the second half to hold a 39-37 advantage with 8:10 left in regulation. A three-pointer by Wheaton's Lynnea Kvam capped a 12-1 Thunder run over a span of 4:10 to give the hosts a 49-40 lead. Chicago closed the hosts' lead to three-points at 49-46 with 1:20 left in the game; however, the Maroons could not get any closer as Wheaton earned the victory.

Senior forward Claire Glass (PICTURED RIGHT) scored a career-high 15 points, with six rebounds and two assists. Junior center Whitney Edgecombe tallied her second “double-double” of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Edgecombe had a strong effort in the second half with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting and seven rebounds following halftime. Junior Kathleen Fidelia scored nine points, with eight rebounds and three assists.

Alex Leach came off the Chicago bench to score 13 points, with seven rebounds and three steals. Molly Hackney and Jill Dance each contributed eight points for the Maroons.

Wheaton shot 40.4% (21-52) from the field, with 16.7% (1-6) from three-point range and 63.2% (12-19) at the free throw line. Chicago recorded a 29.6% (16-54) field goal percentage, with 21.1% (4-19) from three-point range and 68.8% (11-16) at the charity stripe. Chicago out-rebounded the hosts 40-35, with a 10-6 edge on the offensive glass.
