Women's basketball falls at #4-Hope, 73-56

– The Thunder women's basketball team faced its second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday, in the second day of the CCIW/MIAA Classic for women's basketball. Hope (5-1), ranked fourth in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25, defeated Wheaton 73-56 in the final day of the tournament on Saturday. Wheaton was a 59-52 winner against sixth-ranked Calvin on Friday to open the tournament. The Thunder (5-2) will host St. Xavier University on Tuesday at 7 PM in King Arena.

Wheaton led the Flying Dutch 25-20 with 7:35 left in the first half. However, Hope closed out the opening half with a 12-5 scoring run to hold a 32-30 lead at halftime. Hope came out of the locker and out-scored the Thunder 15-3 over the first 6:50 of the second half as the hosts' lead increased to 47-35 with 13:15 left in the game. The Flying Dutch would go on to lead by as many as 20 points, late in the game to earn the victory.

Kathleen Fidelia led the Thunder with 22 points. She added eight rebounds, including three offensive boards, with four assists and two blocked shots. Freshman Kelly Brooks came off the Wheaton bench to scored seven points on 3-for-3 shooting from the field. Junior Jamie Jones scored six points and junior Whitney Edgecombe collected six rebounds.

Hope's Carrie Snikkers came off of the Flying Dutch to scored 15 points, with five rebounds. Jordyn Boles tallied 12 points, with two steals. Stacy Warsen scored 10 points, with 10 rebounds, including five offensive caroms. Philana Greene scored nine points and Julie Henderson recorded eight points, with four assists and two steals.

Wheaton shot 42% (21-50) from the field, with 30% (3-10) from three-point range and a 57.9% (11-19) effort at the free throw line. Hope recorded a 37.3% (28-75) field goal percentage, with 35.3% (6-17) from three-point range and 50% (11-22) at the charity stripe. Hope out-rebounded Wheaton 49-38, with a 24-11 advantage on the offensive glass. Wheaton committed 22 turnovers, aiding the Flying Dutch 24 points off of Thunder turnovers.
