Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Thunder men's basketball lost 83-53 to Hope College on Friday in the opening game of the CCIW/MIAA Classic, hosted by Calvin College. Wheaton, ranked 22nd in this week's
D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll, falls to 4-1. Hope, ranked 16th in this week's
D3Hoops.com poll, improves to 2-1. The tournament will conclude on Saturday when Hope faces Carthage College at 2 PM (EST) and Calvin hosts Wheaton at 4 PM (EST). The Wheaton-Calvin game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at
www.wetn.org.
Wheaton was unable to overcome 21 first-half turnovers as the Flying Dutchmen scored 38 points as a result of Wheaton's 33 turnovers in the game. Hope held a commanding 49-18 lead at halftime en route to the victory.
All-American
Kent Raymond (PICTURED) led the Thunder with 23 points as the only Wheaton player to score in double digits. Sophomore
Ben Panner scored six points, with three assists.
Stephen Young and Jacob Carwell each added five points.
Tyler Wolfe led Hope's five players to score in double digits with 17 points. Derek VanSolkema scored 15 points, with three three-point field goals and six steals. Ryan Klein scored 14 points, Marcus Vanderheide added 11 points with four steals and Ty Tanis scored 10 points off of the Hope bench.
Wheaton shot 42% (21-50) from the field, with 10% (1-10) from three-point range and 66.7% (10-15) at the free throw line. Hope recorded a 50.8% (33-65) field goal percentage, with 45% (9-20) from three-point range and 57.1% (8-14) from the charity stripe.
