Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men's basketball team defeated Benedictine University 73-57 in the Championship Game of the Lee Pfund Classic to win its own tournament for the first time since 2004. Wheaton improves to 2-0, while Benedictine is now 1-1 overall. The Thunder will travel to Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday night to face Loras College. Tuesday's 7:30 PM tipoff will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
Junior Andy Wiele, (PICTURED LEFT) an All-Tournament selection, led the Thunder with 23 points and 13 rebounds to record a “double-double”. The Thunder center was 9-for-11 from the field. All-American guard Kent Raymond was named the Will Landry Tournament MVP with 21 points, four assists and two steals. Guard Ben Panner scord 15 points, with three assists. Senior Phill Denham contributed six points, four assists and four rebounds.
All-Tournament selection Jared Bailey led Benedictine with 16 points and five assists. Ryan Brown came off of the Eagles' bench to score 10 points, with eight rebounds, including five offensive rebounds, as an All-Tournament selection. Dan Klecan and Aaron Brown each added eight points for the Eagles.
Wheaton shot 56.1% (27-49) from the field, with 30% (3-10) from three-point range and 72.7% (16-22) at the free throw line. Benedictine shot 42.9% (21-49) from the floor, with 40% (8-20) from behind the three-point arc and 50% (7-14) at the free throw line.
