Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's soccer team moved one step closer to defending its 2006 NCAA Division III Championship with a 7-1 win against St. Scholastica in the Second Round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday night at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton is now 23-0-0 on the year and has won 41 consecutive matches. St. Scholastica ends the season with a record of 20-3-1.
The Thunder will play in a Sectional (round of 16) next Friday at a site to be determined. Wheaton will face Wisconsin-Stevens Point (16-4-2). The Pointers advanced to the Sectional with a 0-0 tie against University of Chicago in the Second Round and the Pointers earned the advancement with a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks. Wheaton defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point 5-2 on Sept. 12 in Stevens Points, Wisconsin.

Kira Davis gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead when she converted a penalty kick 9:56 into the match.
Taryne Lee scored nine-seconds later when she turned a
Kari Klynstra assist in her 26th goal of the year. With the goal Lee set new Wheaton single-season records for goals (26) and total points (61). Wheaton's lead increased to 3-0 when Davis headed the ball into the net off of a
Sarah Richardson cross at the 13:30 mark of the match. Richardson's assist was her 18th of the year, to set a new school single-season record for assists. Senior
Bethany Barton put the ball into the upper right corner of the net 29:05 into the match. Barton's goal gave Wheaton a 4-0 lead that the hosts would hold until halftime.
Klynstra extended Wheaton's lead to 5-0 just 20-seconds into the second half. Klynstra's goal (PICTURED RIGHT) was served up on a double-assist by freshman
Brittany Bergh and Richardson. Davis netted a hat trick 56:57 into the match when she put the ball into the back of the net off of a break-away opportunity. St. Scholastica's goal came 78:27 into the match when Becky Fisher scored for the Saints. Wheaton's
Jami Herrman utilized a double-assist from
Erin Hodina and Bergh at the 89:00 mark to account for the final score of 7-1.
