Women's soccer defeats IWU 3-2 to advance to CCIW Tournament Finals

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder women's soccer team emerged with a 3-2 win against Illinois Wesleyan in overtime on Tuesday night in the CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals at Joe Bean Stadium. Carthage defeated Augustana 3-0 in Kenosha on Tuesday night in the evening's other semifinal.

Top-seeded Wheaton (21-0-0) will host second-seeded Carthage (15-3-1) on Saturday at 7 PM in the CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament Championship Match. The CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Match will be held at 4:30 PM at Joe Bean Stadium, followed by the women's match. The winners of Saturday's Championship Matches will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Soccer Tournaments. As a CCIW Championship event, only students from participating member schools will be admitted for free and no CCIW or Wheaton-season passes will be accepted.

Illinois Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead early in tonight's match when Elizabeth Sinclair scored just 2:26 into the contest on an assist from Caroline Leighton. Wheaton tied the match at 1-1 at the 16:34 mark of the match as the result of an own goal. The score remained tied at 1-1 for the rest of the first half.

Wheaton took a 2-1 lead when sophomore Taryne Lee scored her 23rd goal 64:10 into the match when she was slipped a crisp assist from freshman Brittany Bergh. Illinois Wesleyan tied the match at 2-2 with less than four minutes left when Sinclair scored. Junior Kari Klynstra scored three minutes into the first overtime, off of a Sarah Richardson assist to give Wheaton the victory.

Wheaton out-shot the Titans 27-6, with a 13-0 edge in corner kicks. Senior Kristin Eggert played 93:02 in goal, making two saves with two goals allowed. Illinois Wesleyan netminder Alli Novak made seven saves and allowed three goals' in the Titans' net.
