Naperville, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team closed out the regular season on Monday night with an 8-0 win at North Central. Wheaton improves to 11-6-1 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW.
The fourth-seeded Thunder will travel to top-seeded Carthage on Wednesday night for a 7 PM CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match. Wednesday's match will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at http://www.wetn.org.
Wednesday's other semifinal in the CCIW Tournament will be third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan at second-seeded Elmhurst in a 2 PM start. The two semifinal winners will play in the CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Match on Saturday at the highest remaining seed in the CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament.
Wheaton gained a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal by Jacob Rhode 13:44 into the match off of a Zac Koons assist. The Thunder led 2-0 at halftime, thanks to a goal from senior co-captain Dolph Westlund (PICTURED).
Freshman Cameron Risma extended Wheaton's lead to 3-0 when he scored off of a Stephen Mesko assist at the 58:51 mark of the match. Matt Ravenscraft extended the Thunder lead to 4-0 with a goal 64:29 into the contest. Westlund's second goal of the match came off of a Mesko assist, 70:16 into the contest. Senior David Adams extended the Thunder lead to 6-0 with a penalty kick at 77:43. Goals in the final ten minutes by Mesko and Adams accounted for the final score of 8-0.
Wheaton out-shot the Cardinals 33-11, with an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper BJ Dons played 70 minutes in the Thunder net, with three saves. Freshman Andrew Hitz played the final 20 minutes of the match, with one save.
