Women's soccer clinches the CCIW Championship with a 5-1 win against Carthage

Two Taryne Lee goals helped lead Wheaton to a 5-1 win against Carthage

– The Thunder women's soccer team was a 5-1 victor against Carthage College on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Bean Stadium. With the win, Wheaton finishes the conference schedule with a record of 7-0-0 to win its 13th consecutive CCIW Women's Soccer Championship.

Tonight's win was Wheaton's 37th consecutive victory to improve the team's overall record to 19-0-0. The Thunder will close out the regular season on Saturday night in a 7 PM (EST) match at DePauw University. The Thunder will serve as the top-seed in next week's CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament, as Wheaton will host the tournament's fourth-seeded team next Tuesday at 7 PM.

Wheaton took an early lead when Libby Passiales slipped the ball past the Carthage goalkeeper off of a Sarah Richardson (PICTURED RIGHT) assist 3:00 into the match. Sophomore Taryne Lee scored 39:15 into the match on a long shot. The Thunder remained a 2-0 leader at halftime.

Carthage cut the Thunder lead to 2-1 when Kelly Baumgartner scored 51:23 into the match. Lee extended Wheaton's lead to 3-1 with a breakaway goal 56:30 into the match. Sophomore Maria Della Torre scored on a penalty kick opportunity with 57:30 left in the match for a 4-1 Wheaton lead. The final score of 5-1 was the result of a Sarah Richardson goal off of a Kari Klynstra assist 60:15 into the match.

Wheaton out-shot the Lady Reds 16-7, with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Eggert played 68 minutes in the Thunder net, with two saves and one goal allowed. Allison Ippel made two saves, playing the final 22 minutes of the match.
