Wheaton, Ill. (10/27) – The Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win against Lake Forest College at home in two overtimes on Friday night. With the win Wheaton improves to 10-7-3 on the season and Lake Forest is now 7-7-2.
Wheaton out-shot the Foresters 19-4 in regulation, including a 10-1 edge in the second half. Each team took three shots in the first overtime. One shot was all Wheaton needed in the second overtime and that game-winning shot came just about three minutes in the second OT when junior Strider Elass (LEFT) slashed through the Lake Forest defense and put the ball over the head of Forester goalkeeper Jacob Elperin to give Wheaton the dramatic 1-0 victory.
Wheaton out-shot the guests 23-7, with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Ryan Souders recorded his seventh shutout of the season, making two saves in 102:53 minutes in the Thunder net. Elperin, Lake Forest 's goalkeeper played well, with 10 saves as he played the full match for the guests.
Tonight's match was the final contest of the regular season for the Thunder and the final regular season match in the 45-year career of its retiring head coach, Joe Bean (PICTURED RIGHT WITH COLLEGE PRESIDENT DR. DUANE LITFIN). Bean was honored prior to the start of tonight's match when Wheaton College announced that East McCully Field will be re-named Bean Stadium, in honor of the coaching legend.
