Men's soccer falls at University of Chicago, 2-1

Chicago, Ill. (10/18) – The Wheaton men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision at the University of Chicago on Wednesday afternoon. Wheaton falls to 8-6-3 on the season and Chicago has an 8-4-2 record on the year.

Wheaton and the Maroons played to a scoreless tie for the first half of today's match, as Chicago out-shot the Thunder 11-3 in the opening period. Chicago took a 1-0 lead shortly after the halftime intermission when Eric Floyd scored from 15 yards out off of a Joe Frontczak assist at the 46:35 mark of the match. Wheaton's Joel DeLass (LEFT) countered 57:33 into the match when he received a Strider Elass assist and beat Chicago goalkeeper Micah Gruber one-on-one to tie the match at 1-1. Floyd gave the hosts a 2-1 lead about five minutes later when he blasted a rebound into the back of the net at the 62:35 mark of the match. Floyd's second goal of the match would be enough for the Maroons to hang on for the victory.

Chicago out-shot Wheaton 20-11 and the Thunder held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Ben Dons played 90 minutes in his first start of the season as he made nine saves and allowed two goals. Gruber made four saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action in the Maroons' net.

The Thunder will return to action on Friday night at 7 PM in a key CCIW match at CCIW-leader North Park . Thunder head coach Joe Bean will go into the match against the Vikings with 599 career victories, just one win shy of becoming the first head soccer coach in collegiate soccer history to achieve 600 career wins.
