Wheaton, Ill. (10/11) – The Thunder men's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory against Illinois Wesleyan at home in a key CCIW match on Wednesday night. The victory was the 598th career win for Wheaton mentor Joe Bean, who is just two victories shy of becoming the first collegiate soccer coach to reach the 600-win plateau.
The Thunder took a 1-0 lead 14:26 into the match when a crisp Dan Mesko pass was sent to senior Steve Rigby who put the ball into the net. At the 31:11 mark Rigby scored his seventh goal of the season as he beat Illinois Wesleyan goalkeeper Win Fisher thanks to an Ari Hyde assist. Hyde beat Fisher to record his sixth goal of the season 35:11 into the match to increase the hosts' lead to 3-0 heading into the locker room at halftime. Junior Strider Elass scored off of a Joel DeLass assist 49:51 into the contest to account for the 4-0 final score.
Wheaton out-shot the Titans 12-5 and out-shot the guests 4-3. Thunder goalkeeper Ryan Souders played 82:35 of the match, making one save. Ben Dons played the final 7:25 of the match. Fisher played all 90 minutes in the Titans' net, allowing four goals with one save.
Illinois Wesleyan falls to 5-7-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in CCIW action. Wheaton improves to 7-5-2 with the win and 3-1-1 in conference play. Wheaton will travel to California this weekend for a pair of matches. The Thunder will play at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday and compete against Azusa Pacific on Monday.
